We can understand 16th century people with 21st century vision. Tyrants are tyrants. Henry VIII was definitely one. We have them now as well.

I always find it interesting to consider that if Arthur had lived, Elizabeth of York most likely would also have lived past 1503 as there would have been no intense pressure for her to have another son. I wonder how/if Arthur/Henry would use her advice giving she had been at the English Royal Court essentially since she was born, and would she take up a formidable 'My Lady the King's Mother'-esque role that Cecily Neville and Margaret Beaufort are known for?

Very interesting, thank you. The prevalence of the disease in young people with strong immune systems, as opposed to old people and children, suggests that over-activation of the immune system was a factor. Dehydration and over-heating due to deprivation of fluids and piling on coverings must also have accentuated fever and damaged internal organs. A mutated virus carried by a vector that proliferated in English society and during late summer seems most likely. Is viral DNA preserved in teeth (like traces of Yersinia pestis) or the dense petrous bone of the ear (like the DNA of ancient hominins?) If so, it would really be worth trying. Otherwise, a disease like this might suddenly reemerge without any modern understanding.

All you have to do is look at the red haired children that came from Catherine Carey. Like Leticia Knollys. And I understand she was a dead ringer for Elizabeth I. Where else did the red hair come from? Elizabeth would NEVER have allowed Leticia the privileges (including her sons) that she bestowed if Leticia was not indeed her true cousin. Where are all the paintings of those that were given honors by the King besides Carey as you mentioned. Why then a portraiture made of the two children (as adults) in very regal clothing? Carey was given so much so that he could support the children of the King and keep his mouth shut. The King had already been through hell and back in trying to legitimize his marriage to Anne, obviously this is how the Protestant church came to reside in England as a result. Having gone through all that, do you think he would have wanted to go through that again in an attempt to legitimize his children? NO. He went to his death still thinking he could get a legitimate heir with a royal marriage, such as Jane Seymour. And, in his mind, when he died, he did have a living heir......not to survive, of course. And there are many of us who do descend from Mary and Henry Tudor that still have the red hair, even to this day.

I always see Elizabeth I as Anne’s revenge. Henry VIII longed for a son to be a great leader but it was a disappointing daughter that would be that great leader.

If the son lived, having other children may not have been stressful for Anne and she may have gone on to have 3 more successfully living children. Maybe should would have died giving birth to that son instead and Henry marries Jane, and now he has and heir and spare and if Jane still end up dying, he wouldn't rush to marry again.

Is it known what regnal name they intended him to take, Arthur I or Arthur II? At that time, would they have taken the Historia Regnum Britania as real history, and considered the mythical king as Arthur I, or did they view their England as a seperate polity from the Britain of Arthurian Legend, and therefore the regnal number would start with Arthur Tudor? I don't recall seeing this addressed anywhere. If Charles III had chosen Arthur, another of his given names, I would assume he would have gone with Arthur I, as Arthurian Legend is now known to be myth, but back in the 1500s, they may have chosen otherwise...

I would think that it is at minimum very unusual that neither King nor Queen would be told about where their infants were buried. In other words would the midwives have just taken the babies away and at their own discretion disposed of the fetuses, without any further mention being made to the infant's parents? Would that have been usual for the time period?

Not my family and not leading to Richard Edwards but a friend of my Momma’s traced her line all the way back to Henry VIII via Edward VI. When I told her he died a sickly 16-year-old she told me plenty of people had illegitimate children back then and maybe she was on top or maybe someone held him up. 🤦‍♀️

I see your assessments as well researched and likely to have happened. Arthur was raised to be a compliment to his father & would have focused on stability rather than glory. Catherine of Aragon would have had 7( key) years of additional fertility. She also would not have lost the baby boy that she went into premature labor with because when Henry was out fighting in France she had to Rally an army for The Ballad of flooding to save his crown......& she prematurely delivered a son who died. The world woukd have been vetter.

I don’t think adultery is such a huge leap for a woman who saw what happened to the Kings first wife after more than 20 years. She must have known being cast aside after less than 3 years of marriage was even worse it terms of her worth, and this was a woman who was heavily pregnant at her wedding. I don’t know why we can’t just see that it is not impossible that she desperately needed to provide a son. The reality is that nobody can say for sure.
